C2 : Water Flashcards
How many partial charges are there for each hydrogen and oxygen atom in water?
2 partial negative charges for oxygen.
1 partial positive charges for hydrogen.
What are the six properties of water?
- High heat capacity
- High heat of vaporization.
- Density
- Viscosity
- Solvent
- Cohesion and adhesion
Why does water have a high heat capacity?
Requires high energy to break the hydrogen bonds between water molecules.
Why does water have a high heat of vaporization?
Requires high energy to break the covalent bonds in water molecules.
What is evaporative cooling?
Heat release during evaporation with minimal water loss where the liquid left cools down.
What happens to volume of water when water in ice form? Why?
Volume increases because molecules are far apart from each other.
Why is water a universal solvent?
It’s polarity.
Can large molecules dissolve in water?
Yes as long as it has a polar and ionic region.
What is cohesion and adhesion force?
Cohesion is the force among water molecules whereas adhesion is the force between water molecules and the walls of xylem.
Why does blood flow easily?
Blood consists mostly of water that has a low viscosity.
