C3 Lysosome Flashcards
What is a lysosome?
A membranous sac of hydrolytic enzyme that can digest macromolecules.
In what pH does lysosomal enzymes works best in?
Acidic.
Where were lysosomal enzymes and lysosomal membranes made from?
Made in the rough ER and further modified in Ga.
What are the two functions of lysosomes?
Intracellular digestion and autophagy.
Elaborate the process of intracellular digestion.
A lysosome fuses with a food vacuole and hydrolytic enzyme digests the food. Eg: lysosomes in macrophage contain enzymes that digests bacteria. Amoeba digest food by using enzyme from lysosome.
Explain autophagy.
Lysosomes use enzymes to digest cell’s own organelles. Hydrolytic enzymes digest the organelles and its components are recycled.
