C3 ER Flashcards
1
Q
What are the characteristics of smooth ER?
A
Smooth ER does not have ribosomes and have a tubular appearance.
2
Q
What are the characteristics of rough ER?
A
Have ribosomes on it’s outer surface and have flattened sacs called cisternae.
3
Q
Functions of rough ER.
A
- Modify secretory protein by adding carbohydrates to form glycoprotein.
- Formation of transport vesicle that buds off from rough ER and travel to Golgi apparatus.
- Membrane factory for the cells. Synthesis of membrane protein and phospholipids.
4
Q
Functions of smooth ER.
A
- Synthesis of lipids and cholesterol needed to make cell membranes.
- Synthesis of steroid hormones.
- Detoxification of drugs and poison esp in liver.
- Storage of calcium ions esp in muscle cells.
