C2 Nucleic Acids Flashcards
What are the two types of nucleic acids?
Ribonucleic and deoxyribonucleic.
What are polynucleotides?
Macromolecules that exists as polymers.
What is polynucleotides made of?
Made up of nucleotide monomers which are joined by phosphodiester linkages.
What are nucleotides consists of ?
- Nitrogenous bases.
- Pentose sugar.
- Phosphate group.
What are nitrogenous bases?
Consists of rings of carbon and nitrogen.
Two types of nitrogenous bases.
- Pyrimidines.
- Purines.
Describes uracil ring structure.
- NH at carbon 1.
- NH at carbon 3.
- C=O at carbon 2 and 4.
- CH=CH at the last two carbons.
Describes thymine ring structure.
- NH at carbon 1.
- NH at carbon 3.
- CH3 attached to carbon 5.
- C=O at carbon 2 and 4.
Describes cytosine ring structure.
- NH at carbon 1.
- C=O at carbon 2.
- NH2 attached to carbon 4.
- Only N at carbon 3.
- CH at the last two carbons.
What does purine have?
6-membered ring fused to a 5-membered ring. Adenine and guanine.
Difference between adenine and guanine in the form of structure.
Adenine have NH2 at 6th carbon and no C=O bond. Guanine have NH2 at 2nd carbon and a C=O bond.
Name the pentose sugar in RNA and DNA.
RNA : Ribose sugar.
DNA : Deoxyribose sugar.
Difference between the pentose sugar in RNA and DNA.
Deoxyribose lacks O atom at carbon 2.
