Burning fuels Flashcards
Complete combustion
Occurs when there is plenty of oxygen. Hydrocarbon+oxygen=carbon dioxide + water+energy
Oxidised
A gain of oxygen. During combustion both carbon and hydrogen atoms are oxidized.
All fossil fuels contain…
sulfur.
Sulfur dioxide
Formed when fossil fuels are burnt and sulfur reacts with oxygen. (S02) It is acidic gas and toxic.
Sulfur can be…
removed from fuel by reacting it with calcium oxide or calcium hydroxide. Petrol and diesel are without sulfur.
Incomplete combustion
When there is a lack of oxygen. Carbon monoxide is formed. (CO)
Carbon monoxide is…
a toxic gas. It is colourless and odourless. The red blood cell carries it around the body instead of oxygen. (CO)
Nitrogen oxides
High temperature inside a car engine allows the nitrogen and oxygen in the air to react. This is toxic, can trigger someone with asthma.
What gases cause acid rain?
- sulfur oxide
- nitrogen oxides
Particulates
Tiny solid particles containing soot (carbon) and unburnt fuels.
Causes of particulates
It travels to the upper atmosphere and reflects sunrays back to the space causing global dimming. Scientists think it can cause cancer and affects lungs.
