Q

Advantages of biofuels

A
  • much less harmful to the animals and plants if it is spilled
  • burns much more clearly, reducing the number of particulates produced
  • will become cheaper to use, as fossil fuels are running out
  • it is CO2 neutral

Q

How is ethanol made?

A
  • fermenting sugar solution, using yeast
  • yeast’s enzyme provide a natural catalyst
  • fermentation takes place in large vats at a temperature between 20 - 30 degrees
  • this produces dilute ethanol solution
  • ethanol is extracted by distillation
