Bio Fuels Flashcards
1
Q
BioFuels are…
A
renewable source of energy. It is made from plant or animal products.
2
Q
Biodiesel
A
Made from oils extracted from plants.
3
Q
Biogas
A
Generated from animal waste.
4
Q
Advantages of biofuels
A
- much less harmful to the animals and plants if it is spilled
- burns much more clearly, reducing the number of particulates produced
- will become cheaper to use, as fossil fuels are running out
- it is CO2 neutral
5
Q
Disadvantages of biofuels
A
- C02 is released to the atmosphere when harvesting, producing and transporting the fuel
- use large areas of farmland
- deforestation to grow more crops
- starvation in poorer countries
6
Q
BioEthanol
A
Is a type of biofuel. Can be made by fermenting sugar solution, extracted from sugar cane or sugar beet
7
Q
How is ethanol made?
A
- fermenting sugar solution, using yeast
- yeast’s enzyme provide a natural catalyst
- fermentation takes place in large vats at a temperature between 20 - 30 degrees
- this produces dilute ethanol solution
- ethanol is extracted by distillation
