Brain Tumors Flashcards
Any supratentorial tumor has 2 key manifestations, what are they,
Increased ICP signs and foval neurological defects
Focal neurological defects differ depending on what?
The site of the tumor
Neurological defects of a Frontal tumor?
Expressive dysphasia, dementia, personality changes, urinary incontinence
Neurological defects of a Temporal tumor?
Receptive dysphasia, auditory problems,
Neurological defects of a Parietal tumor?
Gerstmann’s syndrome, contralateral sensory impairment
What is Gerstmann’s syndrome?
Left-right confusion, unable to write, inability to count fingers, inability to do math
Pituitary adenoma arise from where and are they cancerous
Anterior pituitary gland, and are benign
Pituitary tumors have 2 hallmark effects what are they
Endocrinal disturbance, and the effect of the mass
Mass effect if Superior
Optic chiasm, hypopituitarism, and hypothalamus
Mass effect if Lateral?
Temporal lobe dysfunction, and CN affection from 3 through 6
What is temporal lobe dysfunction
Memory impairment, hallucinations
Mass effect if inferior
Nasopharyngeal mass and CSF rhinorrhea
Pituitary adenoma are split into 2 types what are they
Secreting and non secreting
What are Secreting Adenomas?
Those that present with endocrinological manifestations, usually hyper- due to it being secreting
What are non-secreting adenomas?
Those that present with a mass effect, usually result in hypopituitarism
What causes the increased ICP, in infratentorial brain tumors?
Obstruction of the 4th ventricle
What is the Focal neurological defect in Infratentorial brain tumors?
Cerebellar dysfunction, hence limb ataxia, bad gait, truncal ataxia, tremors. Neck stiffness and head tilt
Medical treatment of pituitary tumors?
Bromocriptine for prolactinomas
Treatment if medical treatment fails for pituitary
Surgery
Investigation for a suspected brain tumor of choice
MRI brain.
What is the most common benign brain tumor of which it is a cyst with yellow fluid
Astrocytoma
What is the tumor that occurs in middle age, presents as epilepsy, and could calcify
Oligodendroglioma
What is the brain of tumor of childhood
Ependymoma
What tumor occurs between 40-60 years, and extends through the corpus callosum?
Glioblastoma
Metastatic tumors affect what after metastasizing
The bronchus first, then the breast and GIT
Schwanommas are most common on which nerves?
5th and 8th
