Arterial Emergencies Flashcards
Immediate Treatment for arterial trauma?
Control bleeding, resuscitation, and prophylactic antibiotics
Definitive treatment for Arterial trauma
Repair of injury
What drugs do we give to treat acute thrombosis, by name?
Streptokinase and TPA ( Tissue plasminogen activator)
What’s the gold standard operative treatment of arterial occlusion (embolism or thrombus)
Fogarty Catheters.
In cases of Compartmental syndrome, what surgery do we do?
Fasciotomy.
Critical limb ischemia is what
Chronic advanced form of PAD, PAD is caused by atherosclerosis, affecting the blood flow in the lower extremities
Acute Limb ischemia can be caused by what
Emobolisms, thrombi, and of course Trauma like stabbing and such
Clinical signs of an Acute limb ischemia
Loss of distal pulses, bleeding, blue toes, parasthesia, so on.
What is the gold standard imaging? And why?
Duplex ultrasound, portable, and can visualize flow/fistulas
What is the use of CT Angiography
To localize the site of the affected artery
What does the ABI do?
Ankle brachial index, upper limb pressure divided by lower limb
What is the most effective surgical technique for removing a thrombus or embolus?
Thrombectomy or Embolectomy with fogarty catheter
What is the “hard sign” of vascular trauma
Absent distal pulses
Most common complication of arterial trauma?
Bleedinf
What is the most common cardiac cause of arterial embolism?
A Fib
