Bone forming tumors Flashcards
bone forming tumors occur from what cell line?
osteoblasts
what is a osteoma?
what is it associated with?
Benign tumor of bone arising from surface of facial bones
Gardner syndrome
What is a Osteoid Osteoma?
on who is it seen?
where does it arise?
Benign tumor of osteoblasts (that produce osteoid) surrounded by a rim of reactive bone
young adults 25 y/o or more
in the cortex of long bones
how does a osteoid osteoma present like?
if imaging is done, what do you see?
what can look like oseoid osteoma? what’s the difference?
bone pain that resolves with aspirin
bony mass (< 2 cm) with a radiolucent core (osteoid).
osteoblastoma but it is larger than 2 cm and arises in vertebrae and does not respond to aspirin
what is osteosarcoma?
on who is it seen?
what are the risk factors?
where does it arise in?
Malignant proliferation of osteoblasts
mostly in teenagers
familial retinoblastoma, Paget’s disease, radiation exposure
metaphysis of long bones (distal femur or proximal tibia)
how does osteosarcoma present?
if imaging is done, what do you see?
what would a bipsy reveal?
pathologic fracture or bone pain with swelling
destructive mass with a ‘sunburst ‘ appearance and lifting of the periosteum (codman triangle)
pleomorphic cells that produce osteoid
