Body membranes Flashcards
Which membrane type(s) are made of both epithelial tissue and connective tissue?
Cutaneous, serous, and mucous membranes.
Which of these is NOT a function of membranes?
Regulate body temperature
Dr. Smith is ready to do open-heart surgery. Which membrane will his scalpel cut first?
Cutaneous membrane
Dr. Smith is ready to do open-heart surgery. Which membrane surrounding the heart will his scalpel cut after he has cut through the skin?
Parietal pericardium
Common locations of mucous membranes?
Hollow organs of the respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive tracts.
The function of mucous membranes?
Lines all bodies that open to the exterior, continuously bathed in secretions and epithelium adopted for secretion and absorption.
Tissues of serous membrane?
Simple squamous epithelium and areolar connective tissue.
Common locations of serous membranes?
Peritoneum - lines the abdominal cavity and covers its organs
Pleurae - in the thorax and isolates the heart and lungs from each other
Pericardia - membranes surrounding the heart
The function of serous membranes?
Line body cavities that are closed to the exterior (except the dorsal body cavity and joint cavities). Occurs in pairs. The parietal layer lines a specific portion of the wall of the ventral body cavity and folds into itself to form
the visceral layer. The visceral layer covers the outside of the organ in that cavity. Serous fluid-found between parietal and visceral layers and is secreted by both membranes and lubricates, allows organs to slide easily across the cavity walls and one another without friction
Tissues of cutaneous membranes?
Superficial epidermis: stratified squamous epithelium
Underlying dermis: mostly dense connective tissue
Location of cutaneous membrane?
Skin
The function of cutaneous membranes?
Protects (keeps water are other precious molecules in the body, keeps excess water and other things out. Insulates and cushions deeper body organs from mechanical damage, chemical damage, thermal damage, UV radiation, and microbes. The uppermost layer is hardened to prevent water loss from the body’s surface.
Tissues of synovial membranes?
Loose areolar connective tissue
Which membrane is the only dry (exposed to air) membrane?
Cutaneous
What are the two layers of serous membranes? What’s the difference between them?
Parietal layer - lines a specific portion of the wall of the ventral body cavity and folds into itself to form
visceral layer
Visceral layer - covers the outside of the organ in that cavity
