Blood Vessels Flashcards
How many branches come off the aorta in humans
Three
What are the branches that come off the aorta in humans
Brachiocephalic artery, left common carotid artery, left subclavian artery
How many branches come off the aorta in quadripeds
Two
What are the names of the branches coming off the aorta in quadripeds
Brachiocephalic artery and left subclavian artery
Do humans have a common iliac artery
Yes
What does the common iliac artery divide into in humans
External and internal iliac arteries
Do quadripeds have a common iliac artery
No
What do the external iliac arteries branch off of in quadripeds
Aorta
What is the exception to the rule that all arteries contain oxygen rich blood and all veins carry deoxygenated blood
Pulmonary circuit and fetal circulation
What carries oxygen and nutrient rich blood from the placenta to the fetus
Umbilical vein
What is the large thin walled duct within the liver which drains into the vena cava; acts as a shunt for blood to bypass non functional liver
Ductus venosus
What carries deoxygenated blood and waste from the fetus to the placenta; thick and branch from end of descending aorta. After birth they degenerate
Umbilical arteries
What are the two structures of fetal heart that shunt blood away from the lungs
Foramen ovals and ductus arteriosus
Blood vessels that drain the digestive viscera, spleen, and pancreas deliver the blood to the liver for processing via this
Hepatic portal vein
This circulation ensures that blood passes through the liver before entering into the main systemic circulation
Hepatic portal circulation
The liver is drained by this which enters the inferior vena cava
Hepatic veins
What are the four branches off the subclavian
Vertebral, costocervical, internal mammary, thyrocervical
This travels through cervical vertebrae and supplies the brain
Vertebral
This supplies costal and cervical regions
Costocervical
This supplies central thoracic wall
Internal mammary
This supplies deep muscles of the neck, shoulder and glands
Thyrocervical
Both of these branch off the brachiocephalic trunk in the cat
Common carotid arteries
The left of this is one of the major vessels coming off aortic arch; right branches off brachiocephalic trunk
Subclavian arteries
First abdominal branch of aorta, immediately after entering abdominal cavity
Celiac trunk
What are the branches coming off the celiac trunk
Left gastric, hepatic, splenic
Branch of aorta posterior to celiac trunk that supplies small intestine and most of large intestine
Superior mesenteric artery
Branch of aorta posterior to superior mesenteric, supplies muscles of body wall and adrenal glands
Adrenolumbar arteries
Branch of aorta posterior to adrenolumbar, supplies the kidneys
Renal arteries
Thin branch of aorta posterior to gonadal, supplies second half of large intestine/rectum
Inferior mesenteric artery
Branches at end of aorta, supplies the pelvic viscera
Internal iliac arteries
What veins unite to form brachiocephalic
Jugular and subclavian veins
This runs alongside the inferior vena cava and drains thoracic intercostal muscles
Azygous vein
These drain the liver
Hepatic veins
Where does the right gonadal and adrenolumbars vein drain
Vena cava
Where does the left gonadal and adrenolumbar veins drain
Renal
This is formed by the union of the external and internal iliacs
Common iliac
