Blood Typing Flashcards
When we mix the blood samples with the serum, what do we look for to show us the antigen present?
Agglutination (clumping)
What blood type is the universal doner?
O negative
Which blood type is the universal recipient? (Does not recognize other blood types as foreign)
AB positive
Where are antigens located?
Surface if red blood cell membrane
Define antigen
Substance that triggers an immune response
What antigens are assessed by the ABO and Rh blood typing?
ABO = A & B antigens
Rh = + or - (have it or you don’t)
Can someone with Rh+ receive Rh-?
Yes, they can receive any type. Since they already have the antigen, giving them blood without the antigen will not be harmful
Can Rh- receive Rh+?
No, if the Rh is present in non antigen contain Rh blood it will be recognized as foreign
How many blood types are there in the ABO system?
4
A, B, AB and O
How many blood types are in Rh system?
2 (positive and negative)
Someone has B negative blood, what type can they receive?
B negative and O negative
What anti-bodies do we know are in the serum of a a person with type A blood?
Anti B-antibodies (reacts to B antigens negatively)
What antibodies may be present in someone with a B blood type?
Anti A antibodies
Antibodies present in O type blood
Anti-A and bd anti-B antibodies (reacts negatively to A and B antigens)
Clumping
Is present as an immune response.
Ex: B negative blood clumps with anti B-antibodies administered in the antigen test for blood typing. So B would show clumping and A and Rh would not making B negative
