BJSHWW, MRI Systemic Flashcards
MRI Systemic Therapy
Classical Model
Brief
Solution-Focused
Made for families
- Presenting problem is most important
- Symptom relief & action-oriented
- Used paradoxical interventions
- Looked at interactional patterns
WHO? People closest to the problem.
Problem as Attempted Solution
MRI Systemic
BJSHWW
-The attempted solution has become the problem. Need to see how to change the attempted solution to shift the pattern of B.
More of the Same
MRI Systemic
BJSHWW
- When the same solution is tried again and again.
- Kid acts out, is punished, acts out more, is punished more.
MRI Systemic: Assessment & Diagnosis
Assessment: Inquiry into the problem to fully understand it and understand the attempted solutions. Mapping of the cycle.
Diagnosis: Non-pathologizing
MRI Systemic: WHO, HOW LONG, GOALS
WHO: 1-2 family members, multiple therapists work together and may also treat the family.
HOW LONG: Brief, less than 10 sessions no matter what
GOALS: Symptom relief, resolve problem, 2nd order change
Paradoxical Interventions
MRI Systemic
BJSHWW
-Families are naturally resistant to change, tell them to do something that makes them realize they have choice in the matter. They either comply and do the thing and see how it makes them feel (more absurd, more intense) or they rebel and realize they have choice.
Positioning
MRI Systemic
BJSHWW
- Paradoxical Intervention
- Have a family member take a more intense position/lean further into the problematic behavior to make them realize how absurd it it.
- She feels too much. -There are meds we can give her so she doesn’t feel anything at all.
Prescribing the symptom
MRI Systemic
BJSHWW
- Paradoxical Intervention
- Tell the client to do the problematic behavior. They either rebel or realize their ability to control it.
Out-of-session Directive
MRI Systemic
BJSHWW
-HW is given for outside of session vs doing it within the session.
Restraining the process of change
MRI Systemic
BJSHWW
-Encourage families not to go too fast.
MRI Systemic: Phases of Treatment
-MRI follows a specific style of session
- Intro to treatment
- Inquiry
- Understand attempted solutions
- Set goals
- Out of session directions/interventions
- Termination
Communications Theory
Bateson
- Directly impacted MRI.
- All people communicate.
- Report: Data driven, what is happening
- Command: More emotion driven
Complementary Relationship
- Used in MRI
- Differences balance each other/complement each other
Symmetrical Relationships
- Used in MRI
- Mirroring in relationship
Types of communication
Bateson
-MRI
Proxemics: Spatial Streptic: Sounds Haptic, Symbolic: Touch Paralinguistic: Pace, tone, inflection Kinesthetic: body motion
