Bipolar I Disorder
Need to have a manic phase of at least 7 days. Elevated mood that leads to significant impairment. Usually accompanied by grandiose thoughts, risky behavior, excessive spending, high risk sexual bx. gambling. Lack of a need for sleep. Usually experienced as euphoria. Often in denial that they are in a manic phase. Frequently followed by a depressive episode. Do not need the depressive episode to diagnose.
Bipolar II Disorder
Has a hypomanic phase, and also has at least one episode of major depression. A distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and abnormally and persistently increased activity or energy, lasting at least 4 consecutive days and present most of the day, nearly every day. Hypomania needs to last 4 days. Has an elevated mood but does not lead to the same level of impairment as BP1. There has never been a manic episode.
Cyclothymic Disorder
Sx for at least 2 years. (at least 1 year in children and adolescents). hypomania symptoms that do not meet criteria for a hypomanic episode and numerous periods with depressive symptoms that do not meet criteria for a major depressive episode. depressive periods have been present for at least half the time and the individual
has not been without the symptoms for more than 2 months at a time.
Cyclothymic Disorder
Sx for at least 2 years.
