Biopsychology - Hemispheric Lateralisation Flashcards
Hemispheric lateralisation
Two hemisphere of brain are functionally different
Left controls
Left controls - language and right side of the body
Right controls
Visual and motor task and left side of the body
Split Brain research
Brain was split by cutting the corpus collision so each hemisphere could not communicate
Sperry aim
Two hemisphere are specialised for certain functions
Sperry method
Used individuals who had there corpus collision cut to help with seizures
Image to patients left visual field or right visual field describe what they saw
Shown stimuli on the (right eye) left hemisphere and asking to respond
Repeated
Drawing tasks object place in front of patient left side of there body it was controlled by the right hemisphere and vis versa
Results
Split brain patients could not transfer information to other hemisphere
left hemisphere - perform task
Right hemisphere didn’t as they wouldn’t be able to comprehend
Unable to respond in the right as language resides on the left and was an able to communicate information to the other hemisphere same with performing tasks
Evaluation of hemispheric lateralisation research
+ standardised procedures
- hard to generalise - case study only using split brain patients - don’t know that there could be an affect that cutting the corpus collosum may have had
