biopsych ogando Flashcards
pituitary gland
located in the brain and is the master gland
controls other hormones
produces anti diuretic hormone which control water balance and blood pressure
thyroid gland
front of neck
regulates body metabolic rate
controlls heart ,muscle and digestive function and brain and bone development
thyroxine regulates metabolism
pineal gland
in brain
regulates sleep patterns
melatonin which s released at night to induce sleep
adrenal gland
they are situated on the top of the kidneys
fight or flight response
adrenal cortex and inner adrenal medulla
produces adrenaline hormone which regulated stress response
adrenal cortex releases cortisol increasing energy levels
pancreas
makes digestive juices
hromones that control blood glucose levels
insulin
reduces glucose levels in blood stream
ovaries
produce eggs and reporductive hormones
oestrigen which regulates mentrual cycle
testes
male repoructive
sperm
testosterone
development of male characteristivs such as growth of facial hair
SAM system
adrenal medulla releases adrenaline which creates physiological arousal and produces flight ot fight response
HPA
adrenal cortex producing corticosteroids like cortisol which helps body to recover after stress
can also reduce immune function
does same and HPA happen simultanously
SAM is istantaneous whereas HPA is slower and doesnt happen easily and is. only activates in more extreme circumstances
HPA response comes second bc even though its triggered at thesame time as sam its reponse time is later and well after fight or flight repsonse
psychological changes bc of SAM
increased heart rate
increased breathing rate
pupil dilation
sweat production
resuction of non essential functions eg salivation
increased heart rate
increases blood flow to organs to increase the movement of adrenaline around the body
increased breathing rate
increase oxygen intake
sweat production
regulates temperature
reduction of non essential fun ctions
increase energy for other essential function=
