Biology - Organ functions Flashcards
Mouth function
teeth break food down, for easier digestion. Food then goes into the oesophagus. Mechanical Digestion
Oesophagus function
Connects mouth to the stomach, swallowed food is transported to the stomach. No digestion occurs
Stomach
Churns food that travels from the oesophagus, digests it. Chemical Digestion
Liver
produces bile, which helps break down fatty acids, processes nutrients absorbed from the small intestine. Chemical digestion
Pancreas
Produces enzymes that break down sugar, fat and starch. Chemical digestion
Small intestine
Breaks down food from the stomach absorbs the nutrients and materials. Chemical digestion
Large Intestine
Absorbs water and salts from undigested food and gets rid of the waste left over. No digestion occurs
Lung
Allows you to breathe, the oxygen you breathe in goes into lungs and passes through the bloodstream.
