Biology - Ecology Flashcards
Abiotic Factors
Non-living factors that affect living organisms and so effect communities
Types of Abiotic Factors
Light intensity, temperature, moisture levels, soil PH and mineral content, Wind intensity and direction, availability of oxygen
Biotic Factors
Living factors that effect the survival of living organisms
Types of Biotic factors
Availability of food, new predators arriving, new pathogens, one species out competing another so the numbers are no longer sufficient to breed
Quantitative Sampling
Taking several readings and then finding the number of pathogens of organisms per meters squared
Range
The range of Data between the minimum and maximum values (subtract lowest value from highest value)
Mean
Add all the readings together and divide by 10
Mode
The most frequently occurring value
Median
The middle value when the numbers are put in order
How can the size of a population of animals or plants be estimated?
By taking samples of the organism from the habitat.
Predator
Consumers that kill and eat other animals
Prey
Animals that are consumed
Photosynthesis Equation
Water + Carbon dioxide — Glucose + Oxygen
Aerobic Respiration Equation
Oxygen + Glucose — Water + Carbon Dioxide (+Energy)
Anaerobic respiration (in animals)
Glucose —– Lactic acid (+some energy)
