Biology Chapter 6 Flashcards
The two major groups of cells
Somatic cells & Gametes
Body cells that make up most of your body tissues and organs (this DNA is not passed on to children)
Somatic cells
Sex cells (eggs, female; sperm, male)
This DNA is passed on to offspring
Gametes
The number of chromosomes in each human body cell
46 (in 23 pairs ><, one from mother and one from father in each chromosome)
Two chromosomes- one from the mother and one from the father as a pair ><
Homologous chromosomes / homologous pair >< (these two chromosomes > and < have copies of the same genes)
Chromosomes that contain genes for characteristics not directly related to the sex of an organism; chromosome pairs 1-22
Autosomes
Chromosomes that directly control the development of sexual characteristics (X and Y)
Sex chromosomes
The fusion of two gametes that results in offspring that are a genetic mixture of both parents
Sexual reproduction
The fusion of an egg and a sperm cell (the nuclei of the egg and sperm cell fuse to form one nucleus)
Fertilization
A cell that has two copies of each chromosome- one from the mother and one copy from the father; aka one full pair of chromosomes (two sister chromatids) >< ><
BODY CELLS
Diploid
