Biology Chapter 1-2 Flashcards
Observation
Describing/Processing noticed events
Problem/Question
Should be asked before investigating, the thing you want to know
Hypothesis
Scientific explanation for a set of observations that can be tested
Controlled Experiment
Experiment, variables kept unchanged/ or controlled
Data/Analyze
The information gained from observing and testing an experiment
Conclusion/ Restated Hypothesis
The experimental data/evidence
Characteristics of Living Things
Reproduction, homeostasis, made up of cells, Evolution, Universal Genetic Code (DNA, RNA), resounds to the environment, Grows and Develops, Metabolism
Atoms
An atom itself is made up of three tiny kinds of particles called subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons
Protons
Positively charged(+), and inside the nucleus(protons and electrons are equal)
Neutrons
Neutrally charged(o), and inside the nucleus
Electrons
Negatively charged(-), and orbits around the nucleus in orbital shells.
Nucleus
The center of the atom with Protons and Neutrons in it
matter
Something that takes up space
Bonding
Either Sharing or Transferring Electrons
Covalent Bonding
Sharing Electrons
Ionic Bonding
Transferring Electrons
Water
Has Covalent Bonds between water molecules Hydrogen Bonds
Adhesion
Sticky to other things (Attraction of water molecules to non water molecules)
Cohesion
Sticks to itself (water molecules stick to other water molecules, result of hydrogen bonding)
Solutions
consists of the dissolved material called the solute and the dissolving agent called the solvent.
Solute
The substance dissolved
Solvent
The substance the solute is dissolved in
Suspensions
The mixture of water and non dissolved material
Quantitive Data
Numbers obtained by counting/measuring
Heat Capacity
The result of mutiple hydrogen bonds
Acids
Compounds that forms H+ ions in solution
Bases
Compounds that produces (OH) ions in solution
Buffers
Weak acids or bases
Independent Variable
Controlled/Changed by the experimenter
Dependent Variable
A measurable outcome
Control
What you are comparing your results to
Structure of a water molecule
oxygen atom bound to two hydrogen atoms by covalent bond
Why Carbon forms so many different compounds
Carbon atoms can bond with other carbon atoms to form chains and rings
Constant
variable kept the same throughout the experiment
Cells
collection of living matter enclosed by a barrier that separates the cell from its surrondings, basic uniforms of life
Water’s Polarity
Has unequal sharing in electrons/protons
Cell Structure
This says that 1. all living things are made of cells, 2. cells are the basic unit of structure and function and 3. cells only come from other cells
Evolution
The process of change over time
