Biofeedback Flashcards
what is biofeedback
The process of detecting physiological activity in the body and converting that activity into visual and/or auditory cues that the patient can use
how is biofeedback measured
The scale on a biofeedback unit may use the number of microvolts, a simple 0-to-10 scale, or a bar graph or other visual representation as the measure
what does the “two active electrodes” measure
the amount of electrical activity within the muscle
what is the thrid electrode used for and what is refered to as
it’s called the refernece electrode and used to filter out nonmeaningful electrical activity
what is the neuromuscular effect of biofeedback
assist in reopening a neural loop that sends efferent signals to the appropriate muscles
how does biofeedback help with pain reduction
- Re-educating muscle and reducing atrophy helps to restore normal biomechanics
- Decreasing muscle spasm reduces the amount of mechanical pressure placed on nociceptors
what are the contraindications for biofeedback
- Conditions where muscle tension or joint motion would cause further injury
- Unstable fractures
- Joint structure injury
true or false
Primary concern relates to the unit’s accuracy in detecting the muscle’s raw signal
true
what is the instrument called which allows fine adjustments on the threshold required to obtain feedback
tuner
