bio-cells Flashcards
Robert Hooke
Saw cell walls in cork (looked under microscope) and named them cells
Why are they called cells ?
Reminded Robert Hooke of empty chambers monks used to live in
Anyone Van Leeuwenhoek
Looked at bacteria from pond water under microscope
3 central ideas of Cell Theory
- All living things are made of cells
- Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things
- All cells come from pre existing cells
2 types of cells
Prokaryote and eukaryotes (much bigger)
5 main differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
Prokaryotic cells are much older
Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles
Eukaryotic cells can perform more complex functions because they have a nucleus and organelles
DNA is bound in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells, DNA flats freely in prokaryotic cells
Eukaryotic cells are about 10x larger than prokaryotic cells
Cell membrane
Regulates what enters and exits the cell
Provides protection and support
Cytoskeleton
Provides protection/support/structure
Cell wall
Helps maintain shape
Cell movement and transport
Nucleus
Controls most cellular processes
Contains DNA
Cytoplasm
Material inside the cell membrane (fluid space)
Smooth ER
Assembles membrane parts
Rough ER
Modifies proteins
Ribosomes
Site of protein assembly
Golgi body
Modify proteins (attach carbs and proteins)
