most are mixed but pure stones do occur
what are the five Fs of gallstones?
FAT, FAIR, FEMALE, FORY, FERTILE
what is cholecystitis?
inflammation of the gallbladder, usually associated with gallstones
what happens in acute cholecystitis?
gallstones obstruct outflow of bile and get subsequent infection
emypyema, rupture, intense peritonitis
what is the gallbladder wall like in chronic cholecystitis?
thickened due to fibrosis but not distended
why do you get biliary colic
stone impacts in the cystic duct
what is a gallstone ileus?
gallstone impacted in the distal ileum
how long would biliary colic last ?
2-6 hours
what is biliary colic assocaited with?
indigestion nausea
how do you get a gallstone in the small bowel?
fistulation between gallbladder and duodenum (the sit together)

small bowel obstruction
treatment of gallstone ileus?
urgent laparotomy to remove stone
tx of cholecystitis?
IV antibiotics,fluids,nil by mouth

symptoms of cholecystitis ?
prolonged pain, fever and leucocytosis
