Beta lipid oxidation - non-synchronous Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the process of beta-oxidation.
A
- The triglyceride is broken down into free fatty acids and glycerol
- Activated to Fatty acid-coA
- It then performs ONE CYCLE of the beta oxidation process so loses TWO CARBON atoms to produce acetyl coA
- The acetyl CoA enters the Krebs cycle
- The remaining fatty acid is ‘activated’ to fatty acid CoA and undergoes a second cycle and loses two carbon atom and produce one acetyl CoA and this is repeated until all the fatty acid is used up

Q
Where does beta-oxidation take place?
A
In the matrix of the mitochondria
