Beta lipid oxidation - non-synchronous Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the process of beta-oxidation.

A
  • The triglyceride is broken down into free fatty acids and glycerol
  • Activated to Fatty acid-coA
  • It then performs ONE CYCLE of the beta oxidation process so loses TWO CARBON atoms to produce acetyl coA
  • The acetyl CoA enters the Krebs cycle
  • The remaining fatty acid is ‘activated’ to fatty acid CoA and undergoes a second cycle and loses two carbon atom and produce one acetyl CoA and this is repeated until all the fatty acid is used up
