A
Inhibits cell wall synthesis

Use indications
A
1st gen = cephalexin (used for skin infection - pyoderma) and cefazolin (used in foals)- less anaerobic activity but excellent against Staph
2nd gen = expansed gram -ve activity but is less active against gram +ve e.g. enterobacter
3rd gen = ceftiofur (very important for septicaemia) - further improved gram -ve e.g. E.coli (Nil milk WHP)

Side effects/contraindications
A
hypersensitive (allergic) reactions. If given PO it can cause anorexia, vomoting, diarrhoea

PK quirks
A
Same as pen i.e
weak acids - pH partitioning
Good distribution except! the eye, lung, abscesses, prostate etc
renal elimination
