Behaviourist Flashcards
Principles of the behaviourist perspective?
All people are born tabula rasa (blank slates)
Learn things from environment
What ways do people learn behaviour from the environment can happen through three main processes?
Classical conditioning
Operant conditioning
Social Learning Theory
Classical conditioning-learning by association
learning happens through association eg: learning that the sound bell means food is coming:
1) unconditioned stimulus = unconditioned response
2) Neutral stimulus = No response
3) Food + Bell= unconditioned response= during conditioning
4) After conditioning: conditioned stimulus = conditioned response
Aversion therapy
Counter of reverse conditioning
Operant Conditioning-
consequences of our behaviour
Positive reinforcement
Receiving a reward
Negative reinforcement
Reinforced by avoiding a potential punishment
Positive punishment
Behaviour is stopped person gets punishment and consequence learned
Negative punishment
Behaviour is stopped removal of stimulus and consequence learned
Social Learning Theory
We learn by observing and imitating those around us
What is modelling?
One particular person can become a model for behaviour
Strengths?
Aversion therapy
Practical and useful applications
Takes into account cognitive processes
Weaknesses?
individual differences not taken into account
too simplistic
doesn’t account for all behaviours
