Loftus and Palmer- Cognitive Area Flashcards
Memory
Background
Recall Memory= Recognition Memory
Aim
To investigate the effect of language on memory (in particular leading questions)
Sample
45 participants Washington uni
What happened to the participants?
They were placed in one of four conditions and tested individually. Only analysed data from 39 of them
Sample Stage 1:
45 participants Washington Uni
Design: Stage 1
Independent measures
Iv?
Verb used in critical:
-Contacted
- Bumped
-Hit
-Collided
-Smashed
Procedure Stage 1:
- Watched 7 film clips (5–30 sec each); 4 included car crashes
-Order of clips varied to reduce order effects
-After each clip:
-Gave an account of the accident
-Answered questions about the accident (including speed estimate – DV)
Critical question:
“About how fast were the cars going when
What were the two conditions different groups will be in? Stage 1
Noise= Headphones
Silence= Wearing headphones
2 min break
Sample study 2:
-Independent measures design was used
-150 NEW students
-Split into 3 groups of 50
Procedure: Stage 2
Participants given 2 sets of questions about content of the article
Took tests in one of two conditions
Same tests taken in same order:
1) Recall test (10 short answers)
2)Recognition Test (16 multiple choice)
Findings conclusions:
Participants performed best in matching conditions (noise + noise). Supports context dependency
14.3= silence
12.7= noise
Research Method:
Lab experiment
Type of data collected?
Nominal/ quantitative
