Social Area-Levine Flashcards
Background?
Inspired by research on prosocial behavior (helping others).
Wanted to see if helping behavior differs across cultures and what factors influence it.
Aim
Aim?
- See if helping strangers varies between cultures
- Stable across different helping situations
-Characteristics of communities
Sample?
1,198 participants in 23 cities (e.g., New York, Rio de Janeiro, Kuala Lumpur).
People were selected randomly (any adult walking alone).
Procedure?
Dropped Pen – Researcher dropped a pen to see if the person picked it up.
Hurt Leg – Researcher limped and dropped a pile of magazines.
Blind Person – Researcher (with dark glasses and cane) waited at a crossing to see if someone helped.
Findings and conclusions?
Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) had the highest helping rates, while Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) had the lowest.
More helpful cities had lower economic development (poorer cities helped more).
Collectivist cultures (focused on community) were not always more helpful than individualist cultures.
Conclusion:
Helping behavior varies across cultures and is influenced by economic factors more than cultural values.
