Basic Navigation Flashcards
What direction do latitudes run? What direction do longitudes run?
Latitudes - East & West
Longitudes - North & South
What is a great circle?
Circle whose plane goes through the center of the earth
How is a nautical mile defined?
One minute of longitude at the equator. 6076.1 feet
What is the Prime Meridian?
Line of Longitude counted a 0 degrees
What is the shortest distance between two points on the Earth’s surface?
Great Circle Route
What is a Rhumb line?
Line of travel where the heading stays the same.
A Nautical Mile is ____ Statue Miles
1.15
What 2 places in aviation is Statue Miles used?
Visibility & Dimensions of Class D airspace
1 Knot = ___ MPH
1.15
What do we call Coordinated Universal Time?
Zulu
What is the difference between Indicated Speed, True Airspeed, Ground Speed, & Mach Number?
Indicated Speed - Aircraft airspeed shows
True Airspeed - Relative speed if no wind
Ground Speed - Speed relative to surface
Mach Number - Ratio of True Airspeed to
Speed of Sound
How is time calculated?
Distance traveled / Ground speed
How is speed calculated?
Distance traveled / Time
How is distance calculated?
Ground speed x Time
How long will it take a plane to travel 100 miles at 120 knots?
120 knots is 2 miles per minute, so
100/2=50 minutes
How fast is an aircraft going if it travels 15 miles in 6 minutes?
6 minutes is 1/10 of an hour, so 15 divided by 1/10 (same as multiplying by 10) is 150 knots
How far did an aircraft with speed 300 knots go in 45 minutes?
300 knots is 5 miles per minute, so 45x5=225
or
45 minutes is 3/4 of an hour and 3/4 of 300 is 225
What is magnetic variation?
Difference between true north and magnetic north
What is an agonic line?
Line where true and magnetic north are the same (No magnetic variation)
What is an isogonic line?
Line connecting points with same magnetic variation
What is magnetic deviation?
Errors in compass due to structure and equipment in aircraft
What is dead reckoning?
Navigation based on speed, course, heading, and time
What is pilotage?
Navigation by landmarks
What is radio navigation?
Navigation using radio navigational aids
