Airspace Flashcards
What classes of airspace are controlled airspace?
A, B, C, D, & E
What rules apply to all aircraft in controlled airspace?
Pilot qualifications, operating rules, equipment requirements
Where is class A airspace found?
18,000 feet MSL to FL600 over continental USA up to 12 miles off the coast.
What are the requirements in class A airspace?
IFR clearance, 2 way radio, Mode C transponder
What airways are found in class A airspace?
J routes
Where is class B airspace found?
At designated (busiest) airports, from surface to 10,000 feet MSL
What are the requirements in class B airspace?
ATC clearance (VFR or IFR), 2 way radio, Mode C transponder, VOR or TACAN receiver
What aircraft are separated in class B airspace?
All from each other, VFRs by half the IFR separation distance
Where is class C airspace found?
At busy airports, not class B, that have a tower and approach control services, from surface to 4,000 feet AGL
What are the requirements in class C airspace?
2 way radio, Mode C transponder
What aircraft are separated in class C airspace?
IFRs from IFRs and VFRs. VFRs by half the IFR separation distance
Where is class D airspace found?
At airports, not class B or C, with a control tower, from surface to 2,500 feet AGL
What are the requirements in class D airspace?
2 way radio
What aircraft are separated in class D airspace?
IFRs only
Where is class E airspace found?
All contolled airspace that is not class A, B, C, or D
What airways are found in class E airspace?
V airways
What aircraft are separated in class E airspace?
IFRs only
What is the only type of uncontrolled airspace in the USA?
Class G
Where is class G airspace found?
From the surface up to the base of controlled airspace
What aircraft are separated in class G airspace?
None
What is a temporary flight restriction?
Protected airspace over disaster, hazard, large public gatherings, or location visited by a dignitary
How is a temporary flight restriction published?
In a NOTAM
Who is allowed to enter a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR)?
Authorized aircraft only
What is a prohibited area? How is it designated?
Designated airspace where flight is not permitted without permission. Designated by Pxx.
What is a restricted area? How is it designated?
Designated airspace over US territory where flight is subject to restrictions. Designated by Rxxxx
What is a warning area? How is it designated?
Designated airspace over the ocean with activity that may be hazardous to nonparticipating aircraft. Designated by Wxxx
What is an alert area? How is it designated?
Designated area with a high volume of pilot training. Designated by Axx
What is a controlled firing area? How is it designated?
Area with activity that could be hazardous to nonparticipating aircraft. Not shown on map. Activity ceases when an aircraft approaches.
What is an MOA? How is it designated?
Designated area used for military training where IFR flight is kept clear. Designated by a name followed by MOA
What is a National Security Area? How is it designated?
Designated area at locations needing increased security. Designated in a NOTAM. Aircraft requested to voluntarily avoid it.
