What is a movement area?
runways, taxiways, etc used to taxi, takeoff, and land
What color paint is used to mark a runway or heliport?
White
What color paint is used to mark a taxiway or closed area?
Yellow
How is a hospital heliport marked?
Red H on a white cross
How are runways numbered?
Magnetic azimuth of centerline rounded to nearest ten, and drop the zero. (5’s round up)
How are parallel runways designated?
Two runways: L, R
Three runways L, C, R
Four runways: L, R, L, R with one set of L & R using next runway number
How wide is a runway with 4, 6, 8, 12, or 16 stripes?
4 - 60 feet, 6 - 75 feet, 8 - 100 feet, 12 - 150 feet, 16 - 200 feet
What is the runway threshold?
Beginning portion of runway usable for landing. Marked with 4 - 16 stripes
What is the touchdown zone?
Pairs of 3, then 2, then 1 rectangulars on either side of centerline
What markings does a runway with a precision approach have?
runway number, center line, threshold, touchdown zone, aiming point
What markings does a runway with a nonprecision approach have?
runway number, center line, threshold, aiming point (no touchdown zone)
What do runway shoulder markings look like?
yellow stripes at side of runway at a 45 degree angle to the runway
What is a displaced threshold?
Area at end of runway usable for takeoffs and OPPOSITE direction takeoffs
What is a relocated threshold?
Area at the end of runway that is not usable
How is a closed runway marked?
Permanently closed: yellow X every 1000 feet
Temporarily closed: yellow X at each end
