Approaches Flashcards
What are the 4 segments of an instrument approach?
Initial, Intermediate, Final, Missed
What does a precision approach have that a nonprecision approach does not have?
Vertical guidance
What types of precision approaches are there?
ILS, GLS (GPS with vertical guidance).
If there are still any left, MLS, PAR
What component may an ILS have?
Localizer, glideslope, marker beacons, approach lights, compass locator
What does an ILS approach become when the glideslope is not available?
Localizer approach
Name some nonprecision approaches.
Localizer, Back course, VOR, VOR/DME, TACAN, GPS, NDB, ASR (airport surveillance radar approach)
What are the different sections of an instrument approach chart?
Pilot briefing area- frequencies, missed apch Planview- overhead view of approach Profile- side view of approach Airport- overhead view of airport Minimums- chart of altitude minimums
On an instrument approach chart, where is the name of the approach found?
Upper right and lower right
In the planview, what is the MSA?
Minimum Safe Area, usually within 25NM
In the Airport view, what is the TDZE?
Touchdown zone elevation (height at end of runway)
Where can you find the missed approach procedure?
Pilot briefing area in words
Profile view in symbols
What is the difference between Minimum Descent Altitude and Decision Height?
Nonprecision approach has MDA.
Precision approach has DH.
How are the final approach fixes depicted for precision and nonprecision approaches?
Precision (Lightning Bolt)
Nonprecision (Maltese Cross)
What is a circling approach?
Circling to land on a different runway than the instrument approach was made to.
What type of approach does the pilot need to report the airport in sight?
Visual. (Actually can report an aircraft in sight that has the airport in sight)
