Bartholins Cyst

What is it?

Answer 1

Gland secretes mucous becomes obstructed
Mucous helps in lubrication of the vagina to facilitate intercourse
Obstruction leads to formation of cyst which can lead to abscess if infected

Question 2

What are features?

Answer 2

Asymptomatic swelling- normally at 4 or 8 o clock position
Pain- larger cysts
Dyspareunia
Abscess- pain tenderness and fever

Question 3

What is the management?

Answer 3

Conservative if asymptomatic
Abx if infection

Surgery
- I&D followed by word catheter to allow continued drainage
-Marsupialisation- creation of permanent opening to prevent recurrence
