Q

How to diagnose trueperella and Corynebacteria?

A

Signalment
Sample if in sterile site
Perform gram stain/diff quik
Culture for definitive diagnosis

*** Pathognomic usually so presumptive diagnosis is ok

Q

Trueperella pyogenes disease characteristics

A
  • Most common cause of pyogenic DX in cattle

Q

How to treat for trueperella and Corynebacteria

A
  • Surgically debride and drain
    ABX
  • Often not effective in chronic cases as bacteria are inside an abscess with thick capsules = poor penetration
  • Ruminants may not be worth the cost of therapy
  • Penicillin is drug of choice

Q

Ulcerative lymphangitis characteristics

A
  • DX of horses and cattle
  • Commonly on hind limbs
  • Spread VIA lymphatics
17
Q

Disease caused by Corynebacteria
Renale?

A
  • Infectious pyelonephritis
  • “Pizzle Rot” (balanoposthitis)
18
Q

Infectious pyelonephritis characteristics?

A
  • DX in COWS not bulls
  • BULLS are carriers
  • Spread via lymphatics with ulcerating lesions
