What is nicotine?
A drug found in tobacco smoke - produces a sensation of calm well being
What are the problems of carbon monoxide in the tobacco smoke?
It is a poisonous gas that takes up some of the oxygen - carrying capacity of your blood - leads to shortage of oxygen - becoming breathless
What are the problems of smoking during pregnancy?
Can lead the fetus may not getting enough oxygen to grow properly
What is tar?
Sticky black substance that accumulates in the lungs turning them from pink to grey
What is bronchitis?
Inflammation and infection of the bronchi
How does chronic obstructive pulmonary disease occur?
Build up of tar that destroys the structure of the alveoli - reducing surface area to volume ratio of lungs - leading to sever breathlessness
What can carcinogens do?
Can cause the cilia in the trachea which moves bacteria and mucus in the lungs away from your lungs to become anaesthetised - allowing pathogens to enter your lungs
What can smoking do to the arteries?
Increase risk of clot formation
Can also lead to an increase in blood pressure and leads to coronary heart disease
