B4.7 Transport systems in plants Flashcards
What is the main product of photosynthesis?
Glucose
What does the phloem transport?
Transports sugars made by photosynthesis
What is translocation?
The movement of dissolved sugars from the leaves to the rest of the plant is called translocation
Is the phloem a living tissue?
Yes
What does the Xylem transport?
Carries water and mineral ions from the soil around the plant to the stem and leaves
What is glucose used for?
Respiration and growth
Why is mineral ions important?
Production of proteins and other molecules within the cells
Why does the plant need water?
For photosynthesis
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water = glucose + oxygen
Why is water important for the structure of a plant?
Needs water for the plant to hold itself upright - when a plant has plenty of water inside it - the vacuole presses the cytoplasm against the wall of the cell - this pressure gives support for young plants
