What are the main types of pathogens in plants?

What is the rose black spot?
Fungal disease of rose leaves that causes purple or black spots to develop on the leaves and it is a nuisance in gardens and for commercial flower growers
What does the rose black spot do?
Causes the leaves to turn yellow and drop early - weakens the plant because it reduces the area of leaves available for photosynthesis - as a result the plant does not flower well
How is the rose black spot spread?
The spores of the fungus are spread in the environment carried by the wind - then spread over the plant after it rains in drips of water that splash from one leaf to another
The spores stay dominant over winter on the stems of rose plants
How do gardeners prevent the rose black spot?
Prevent the spread by removing and burning affected leaves and stems
Chemical fungicides can treat the disease and prevent it from spreading
What is a protist?
A type of single-celled organisms
How are diseases caused by protists caused?
Involved a vector that transfers the protist to the host
What is malaria?
Disease that is caused by protist pathogens that are parasites - they live and feed on other living organisms
What does the life cycle of the protist include?
Time in the human body and the time in the body of a female Anopheles mosquito
How do protists reproduce in mosquitos?
Sexually
How do protists reproduce in humans?
Asexually
What happens when protists are passed into the human blood stream?
Protists travel around the body in the circulatory system - affect the liver and damage red blood cells
How can the spread of malaria be reduced?
Using insecticide-impregnated insect nets to prevent mosquitos from biting humans and passing on the protists
Using insecticides to kill mosquitoes in homes and offices
