B1.6 Diffusion Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration with a concentration gradient
What factors affect the rate of diffusion?
Concentration gradient
Temperature
How does a concentration gradient affect the rate of diffusion?
The bigger the difference - the faster the rate of diffusion as more particles will move randomly toward the area of low concentration
How does the temperature affect the rate of diffusion?
Means more particles have more kinetic energy - this will lead to them moving around quickly - causing the net movement of particles to speed up - increasing the rate of diffusion
How does oxygen get into your red blood cells?
Air in the lungs diffuse into red blood cells from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
Why does diffusion take place more if the surface area is increased?
Much more of a substance moves in a given time
