B6.1 Vaccination Flashcards
What are antigens?
Unique proteins on every surface of a cell
What do antibodies do?
Join up with the antigens and inactivate or destroy that particular pathogen
What are memory cells?
White blood cells that can destroy the same pathogen if it enters the body again
What is immunisation?
Involves giving you a vaccine made of a dead or inactivated of a disease causing microorganism
How do vaccinations work?
Small amount of dead or inactive forms of a pathogen is introduced into your body - the stimulates the white blood cells to produce anti bodies needed to fight the pathogen
What is herd immunity?
If the large proportion of the population is immune to a disease the spread of the pathogen in the population is reduced
