What does the human circulatory system consist of?
Blood - blood vessels - and the heart
What does plasma carry?
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Platelets
What does the blood plasma transport?
Waste carbon dioxide produced by the cells is carried to the lungs
Urea formed in the liver from the breakdown of excess proteins is carried to kidneys
What are the adaptions of red blood cells in order to carry oxygen around?
Biconcave disc - increase surface area to volume ratio for diffusion
Haemoglobin that binds to oxygen
Have no nucleus making more space for haemoglobin
What is the purpose of the white blood cells?
Helps protect your body against microorganisms and bacteria
How do white blood cells protect your body?
Producing antitoxins
Phagocytes engluf and digest bacteria
Produce antibodies
What are the purpose of platelets?
Help the blodo to clot at the site of a wound
