What are Salmonella?
Bacteria that live in the guts of many different animals
Where can salmonella be found?
In raw meat - poultry eggs - and egg products such as mayonnaise
How does salmonella food poisoning occur?
If they get into our bodies - they can disrupt the balance of the natural gut bacteria and can cause Salmonella food poisoning
How can Salmonella food poisoning occur?
Eat undercooked food when the bacteria have not been killed by heating
Another is - eating food prepared in unhygienic conditions where food is contaminated with Salmonella bacteria from raw meat
What are the symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning?
Fever
Abdominal cramps
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Why is Salmonella infections dangerous for very young children and the elderly?
Because of dehydration
What is poultry?
Domestic fowl
What is Gonorrhoea ?
A sexually transmitted disease which is also known as an STI
What are the early symptoms of Gonorrhoea?
Thick yellow or green discharge or pain in urination
What can untreated gonorrhoea cause?
Long- term pelvic pain
Infertility
How can Gonorrhoea be treated?
With antibiotics - due to it being bacterial
How was Gonorrhoea first treated?
Using penicillin but now it has many antibiotic resistant strains
How can the spread of gonorrhoea be prevented?
Using a barrier method of contraception such as a condom
What is Agrobacterium tumefaciens?
Bacterium that causes a crown galls - a mass of unspecialised cells that often grow at the join between the root and the shoot in infected plants
How does the Agrobacterium work?
Inserts plasmids into the plant cells and cause a mass of new undifferentiated genetically modified cells to grow
