B7 Page 8 Flashcards
Explain what(and why) when a gene of one organisms is transferred to another.
The organism with the transferred gene will then produce a protein using instructions in that gene.
The protein can be made even though the gene came form another organism because all organisms use the same genetic code.
Give the definition for genetic modification.
Genetic modification is where a gene form one organisms is transferred to another.
Explain all the stages in genetic modification.
1) Desired gene is isolated, it’s position on the source DNA is identified
2) The useful gene is replicated
3) The gene is joined a to a vector- a carrier for the gene which makes it easier to insert into a new cell. ( Plasmids and vectors are usually used as vectors)
4) Vectors containing the useful gene are transferred into the new cells.
5) select the individuals that have been successfully modified.
Give some applications genetic modification is used for.
MAKING MEDICINE- insulin hormone can be transferred to bacteria which are grown in a fermenter then the human insulin is simply extracted as its produced.
MAKING CROPS HERBICIDE RESISTANT-
