B7 Page 2 Flashcards
What are the properties of capillaries?
They have permeable walls, so substances can diffuse in and out.
What are capillaries?
Really tiny blood vessels that branch of from arteries.
What is a network of capillaries called?
Capillary beds.
How are chemicals exchanged between cells and capillaries?
As blood passes through capillary beds small molecules are forced out of the capillaries to form tissue fluid, which surrounds the cells. These fluids then diffuse out of the tissue fluid and into the cells.
Waste chemicals diffuse out of the cells into the tissue fluid, then into the capillaries.
What are ligaments? And how are they suited to their function?
Ligaments hold bones together, they have a high tensile strength but are also slightly elastic to stabilise movement.
What’s synovial fluid?
Membranes at the joints release synovial fluid to lubricate the joints, allowing them to move more easily.
What is cartilage? What are its properties?
Cartilage is on the end of bones and is smooth to reduce friction. It also is a shock absorber.
What are tendons? What are their properties?
Bones are attached to tendons and tendons are attached to bones
Tendons can’t stretch much so when the muscle contracts the tendon will transmit the force form muscle to bone.
What are antagonistic pairs?
Muscles can only pull so when one muscle in the pair contracts, the joint moves in one direction. When the other muscle contracts, it moves in the opposite direction.
