B7 Page 1 Flashcards
What is the function of red blood cells?
Red blood cells are designed to carry as much oxygen as possible, which is why it has a concave shape to allow it to absorb as much oxygen as possible. Has no nucleus so It can hold more oxygen.
What are the four things blood is made of?
Red blood cells
Plasma
White blood cells
Platelets
What is the function of plasma?
Plasma is a liquid that carries nutrients and waste.
Nutrients= Glucose, antibodies, amino acids, hormones Waste= Urea, carbon dioxide.
What is the function of white blood cells?
They attack microorganisms to protect the body form infection.
What is the function of platelets?
Small fragments of cells that help the wound clot at the site of the wound.
Explain how humans have a double circulatory system.
1) The first pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs to take in oxygen. The blood returns to the heart.
2) The second pumps the oxygenated blood around the body. The blood gives up its oxygen at the body cells and the deoxygenated blood returns to the heart to be pumped to the lungs again.
Name the vein and artery on the right side of the heart.
1) Vena cava is the vein
2) Pulmonary artery
Name the vein and artery on the left side of the heart.
1) The aorta is the artery
2) Pulmonary vein.
What do the valves do in the heart?
Prevent backflow
What is the name for the veins that carry oxygen to the heart muscles?
Coronary arteries
