B5 Page 5 Flashcards
What are the only cells that are mitotically active (divide by mitosis)?
Meristems found in plant tissue.
What does meristems contain?
Plant stem cells.
What areas are the meristem tissue found?
Areas that the plant is growing such as the roots and shoots.
What does meristems produce?
Unspecialised cells that are able to decide into any cell type in the plant.
What can the plant stem cells become?
Specialised cells can form tissues like xylem and phloem ( the water and food transport tissues).
What can plant tissue form?
They can group together to form organs like leaves, roots, stems and flowers.
Cuttings taken from an area of the plant that’s still growing can become what? (containing unspecialised meristem cells)
A whole new plant which will be a clone of the parent.
What can happen if you place plant cuttings in soil?
They may not always grow.
How can you increase the speed of growth in plant cuttings to become whole plants?
Place rooting powder which contain plant hormones such as auxins which produce roots to grow faster and become whole plants.
