B5.1.3 Meiosis Flashcards
1
Q
Diploid cells
A
Cells which contain two sets of chromosomes-46 in humans
Normal body cells
2
Q
Haploid cells
A
Cells which contain one set of chromosomes -23 in humans
Sex cells
3
Q
Zygote
A
Fertilised egg
4
Q
What happens in fertilisation?
A
2 haploid gamete cells join together to form diploid cell zygote
Zygote divides many times through meiosis to produce new organism
5
Q
Genome
A
Entire genetic material of an organism
6
Q
How are gametes produced?
A
Cell division called meiosis
7
Q
What does meiosis do?
A
- produces non-identical cells
- produces 4 cells
- produces haploids from 1 diploid
- only occurs in reproductive organs (testes&ovaries)
8
Q
Meiosis division 1
A
- Before division cell duplicated DNA
- Chromosomes line up in centre
- Pairs pulled apart so each cell has copy of each chromosome
- 2 new cells formed
9
Q
Meiosis cell division 2
A
- chromosomes line up in centre of cells again
- Arms of chromosomes pulled apart to either end of cells
- Cells divide to form 4 haploid gametes with only a single set of chromosomes and all genetically different
