B4.1.1 Ecosystems Flashcards
Ecosystem
All of the living organisms and physical conditions in an area
Community
All of the organisms within an ecosystem
Habitat
Where the community live
Population
Total number of organisms of each species
Producers
Organisms that make their own food by photosynthesis
Consumers
Organisms that cannot make their own food, eat other organisms to gain energy, (all animals)
Decomposers
Consumers which gain energy by feeding on dead or decaying material
How is energy transferred to producers?
Light energy from sun –> chlorophyll in cells of producer –> carbon dioxide + water = glucose + oxygen
glucose stores energy in chemical bonds = creates carbs, proteins, fats as energy stores or used for growth and repair
Biomass
Mass of living material present in an organism
Increases as organism grows
How is energy transferred between organisms?
Consumers eat producers, organism respires and energy stored in food is transferred in production of ATP
Arrows in food chain
Show the transfer of biomass and energy transfer
Left to right, points to eater
Each step in food chain is…
Trophic level
How are consumers further classified?
Primary consumer-herbivores (eat producer)
Secondary consumer-carnivores (eat primary consumer)
Tertiary consumer-carnivores (eat secondary consumer)
