B2.2.4 plant Transport Systems Flashcards
1
Q
Xylem
A
- transports water and mineral ions
- Roots to stem, leaves and flowers
- Water diffuses into roots by osmosis
- mineral ions are taken in my active transport
2
Q
Phloem
A
- transports dissolved sugars made during photosynthesis and other soluble food molecules
- from leaves to other areas=translocation
- sugars taken to meristems to make new cells and energy in roots.
3
Q
Xylem and phloem
A
Xylem + phloem = vascular bundle
- tissues found close together in plant
- transport
- support
4
Q
Xylem structure
A
- made of dead xylem cells
- one way movement
- wall=thickened for support
- no end walls between cells
5
Q
Phloem structure
A
- two-way movement
- sieve plates (cell wall with small holes)
- made of living cells
- cell walls dont completely break down = sieve plates
- sieve plates allow dissolves sugars through
6
Q
Vascular bundle in leaf
A
Network that supports softer leaf tissue
7
Q
Vascular bundle in stem
A
Located around outer edge for strength in bending in the wind
8
Q
Vascular bundle in root
A
Located in centre, enables root to act as centre and anchor
