B3.3.5 Osmotic Challenges Flashcards
Symptoms of dehydration
- dark, concentrated urine
- headaches and dizziness
- lack of energy
What triggers thirst response?
Reduction in water potential of blood plasma
Increase in salt concentration
What is the thirst response?
Impulse sent to brain informing you to take more fluids
Kidney produces less urine
If more fluids not taken = dehydrated
What happens when you take in too much water/not enough salt?
Water potential of blood plasma rises above water potential of cells
Kidneys increase volume of urine produced
If rapid consumption: water moves to cells by osmosis, cells burst, also sodium in blood plasma drops=muscle cramping, confusion, seizures
Hypertonic
High levels of glucose and salt
Hypotonic
Low levels of glucose and salts
Isotonic
Ion concentrations = that in blood plasma
