Some Reasons for Infertility
- blocked Fallopian tubes
- not enough sperm being released in testes (low sperm count)
- lack of mature eggs produced in ovaries
- failure of ovaries to release egg
What is fertility treatment?
Treating some infertility using hormones
FSH for fertility
-can be used as artificial fertility drug
-when taken by woman stimulates eggs to mature in ovaries
-triggers oestrogen production
Increases chances of pregnancy + increases likelihood of released eggs
Why use In Vitro Fertilisation?
-if treatment with hormones is not successful
How ivf works
- FSH & LH are given to mother to ensure that as many eggs in ovaries are mature as possible
- doctors collect eggs from ovary of mother
- fertilises eggs with sperm from father outside body
How in IVF not completely reliable?
- no pregnancy
- multiple pregnancies (1 in 5)
Considerations around IVF:
- not natural process
- allows parents who can’t conceive to have baby
- enables older parents to have kids
- many IVF treatments result in multiple births, could be dangerous for mother and unborn babies
- V expensive, only limited availability through NHS
- Allows younger women to focus on Careers and have baby later
